Dapper Labs Licenses Disney IP, Announces Disney Pinnacle NFT Project

On November 14, Dapper Labs announced the upcoming launch of Disney Pinnacle, an all-new socially driven collectible experience that brings the magic of pin collecting to the digital age.

With this announcement, Dapper Labs – the blockchain studio behind other notable NFT projects including NBA Top Shot, NFL ALL DAY, and CryptoKitties – has become the latest licensee of Disney’s intellectual property.

The Disney Pinnacle NFT project will tokenize Disney’s beloved pins from the parks and enable an online platform focused on socialized collecting and trading for the global Disney community.

Disney Pinnacle will be built on Flow Blockchain, a layer 1 Blockchain created by Dapper Labs, where users will be required to create a Dapper Labs wallet in order to partake. According to Roham Gharegozlou, CEO of Dapper Labs, the Disney Pinnacle mobile app will also incorporate Dapper Labs’ wallet technology for seamless user onboarding.

With non-crypto users in mind, the app will supposedly include as little Web3-native language as possible. Reminiscent of the way the Starbucks Odyssey NFT program refers to NFTs as “stamps,” the app will use terms like “digital collectibles” instead of “NFTs” in hopes of onboarding Disney’s physical-first collectors.

Since Pinnacle appears to be created to attract the non-Web3-native user base, it may just be the perfect time to onboard a new digital community of Disney fanatics. “As the technology gets better we can sort of abstract it out more, so the word ‘NFT’ doesn’t show up anywhere in the product,” Gharegozlou told AdAge. “Every transaction is verified on the blockchain, but nobody has to pay attention to that if they don’t want that, so they can be fully immersed in a Disney experience.”

Pin collectors can expect to see digital collectible pins featuring Disney’s original characters across Pixar and Lucasfilm. This includes adored characters like Buzz Lightyear, Darth Vader, and the Disney princesses.

At the time of launch, prices for the pins were not yet shared with the public.

As Disney’s pins have been highly coveted and traded items in the physical world for decades, the move by Dapper Labs into the so-called phygital pairing of physical and digital assets appears to leverage the existing collectibility of certain Disney-branded merchandise.
