Zynga To Release Its First Web3 Game: Sugartown
Milestone Date: August 14, 2023
Zynga is the major mobile game developer that created the popular FarmVille game. Now, Zynga is headed for the blockchain to develop its first Web3 game called Sugartown which will be based on the Ethereum network
The plot of Sugartown centers on three farm animals who unintentionally discover a passage to Sugartown, where they meet interesting beings called “Oras,” who use their creative imagination to transform Sugartown into a vibrant land of fun and games. Watch the game trailer here.
Sugartown is inhabited by Oras; beings that are represented by an ERC-721-compliant NFT on Ethereum. At the time this article was posted, Oras were for sale on OpenSea for 0.2336 ETH (~US $371.43).
So where does the Web3 component come into play, you ask? Players will gain entry to the game by using ERC-721 Ora NFTs as proof of ownership, a blockchain practice known as “token-gating.” Players can also stake Oras to earn energy so they can play games in Sugartown and earn Sugar, which is the in-game currency used to access rewards.
Interested players can mint Oras during the launch of Sugartown later this year.
"We're excited to launch Sugartown both as Zynga's first Web3 game and as the first new Web3 game with [original intellectual property (IP)] by a major mobile game developer. Zynga has always been on the forefront of innovation, and with Sugartown, our ambition is to empower players through a sustainable Web3 platform full of fun and enduring games. We created Sugartown to appeal to a native Web3 market, but with the ambition of scaling much wider over time while we build a passionate and engaged community of holders we hope will enjoy this experience as much as we loved bringing it to life," said Matt Wolf, Zynga's Vice President of Blockchain Gaming.
A successful blockchain game by Zynga, like Sugartown, could help catapult the advancement of blockchain gaming as a whole.
