Blockchain Project: Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) CBDC Program

The HKMA has a three-pronged approach to implementation of a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC), called e-HKD. The pilot program examines use cases, as well as implementation and design issues relating to e-HKD. 16 selected firms from the financial, payment and technology sectors are participating.

In addition to the retail CBDC, HKMA is piloting a wholesale CBDC (wCBDC) endeavor called, "Project Ensemble".
